Agates are a semiprecious silica or quartz mineral that are a form of Chalcedony. They are formed in varying bands of color and transparency. It has a wide variety of colors and appearances.

Agates are found throughout the world, including in the western United States. They are formed primarily in volcanic rock or lavas. Agates are thought to symbolize strength, courage and protection. 

Agates are strong durable stones, with a Mohs hardness rating of 6.5-7.
